Teaching Multiple Languages

Teaching children multiple languages is a trend that is growing more and more popular.  While learning multiple languages is clearly valuable later in life, it also has many advantages in childhood.  It can help with brain and cognitive development. Experts are saying that exposure to multiple languages will “improve [a child’s] listening, problem-solving, and reasoning skills in general.”

While I initially assumed that introducing a foreign language would be something that should occur after a baby already has concrete base of their native language, multiple sources would argue otherwise.   One article explained that learning a foreign language can actually enhance a child’s understanding of its first language.  Because of this, multiple languages can be introduced before the baby can talk at all.  The key factor for learning multiple language is simply exposure to it.  Experts argue that exposure to foreign languages in the first year of life is very valuable, and will make learning easier in the future.  This is often referred to as the immersion approach.  Repetition of words at a young age will make them easier for kids to use and understand as they grow older.

Enriched language play using multiple languages seems to be very effective.  In an increasingly diverse culture, knowing more than one language is very valuable.  Bilingual children will benefit cognitively at a young age, and will have growing advantages as they age.

  1. couldn’t agree more with your post. My wife and I started speaking two languages to our son since he was born and it sure paid off. He even picked up a third language to fluency level in school.
