Development of Temperament In Infants

When we read overviews of any psychological literatures and books, the influences of temperament are wildly engaged in all aspects of psychology. Psychologists usually are likely to consider the temperament as a cause for human’s behavior and though. For instance, there are many affluent psychological researches involving influence of temperament such as study of depression, romantic relationship, emotion regulation and development of brain or nerve system. Therefore, the development of temperament is very important for people’s future live and how people develop a positive temperament in infancy became a crucial task for development psychological research. Fortunately, current researches of temperament have already had some achievements for it.

Based on the empirical researches, Thomas and Chess invited an original model of temperament. Rothbart renewed the old model of temperament and add a new section into model of temperament. Both two models of temperament included measurement of emotion, attention, action and irritable distress. The later model added self regulation into model of temperament. Psychologists structured three types of children with different temperament, easy child who quickly and cheerfully obtain new information and experiences, difficult child who has irregular daily routines and is slow to accept new experience and slow- to-warm –up child who shows mild-key reaction to environmental stimuli and adjusts slowly to new experiences. Many studies indicated that temperament was stable for any particular people except someone suffering some fatal life events such as losing parent, separation from romantic partner and so on. However during infancy and childhood, there were many external and internal factors affecting shape of temperaments for children. Genetic and environmental influences were considered as crucial factors of developing temperament. Although we can not modify the genetic influence of temperament, parental caring and modeling play more important role to help children developing cheerful temperament. Children are likely to use social referencing to approach into strange experience. Usually, children spend all day or almost time on activities with parent or relatives in family, so that modeling from parents and adopting inference from parents are usually used by infants or children. In order to help infants develop a nice temperament, I suggest all parents need to give right guide to help children regulating emotion and they also need regular themselves’ emotion at right way.
